Install multiple versions of IE on your PC

mutiple ie thumbEver wanted to test your website in various versions of Internet Explorer?

It is possible to run Internet Explorer in standalone mode without having to over-write previous versions thanks to Joe Maddalone who came up with a way of achieving that in November 2003. Basically, Internet Explorer is run by exploiting a known workaround to DLL hell - which was introduced in Windows 2000 and later versions - called DLL redirection.

Manfred Staudinger perfected the standalone versions by adding IE version numbers to the title bar of the standalone browser window. Moreover, by removing the "IE" key in the registry subkey [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Version Vector] Internet Explore defaulted to respecting conditional comments based on the version number prebuilt in the program.

It is not difficult to follow the instructions and get any version of IE running in standalone along side other versions. Most of you probably know of evolt's archive of Internet Explorer which has them readily packaged in ZIP files. Now suppose you want to download them all. An installer that would conveniently automate the whole process would be great. Thanks to this comment for the idea.

So I made an installer which contains IE3 IE4.01 IE5 IE5.5 and IE6

which, in the end , will conveniently create shortcuts based on your preferences

Important Notes:

  • The installer was made to work with Windows XP. With a little bit of hacking it could run on Windows 2000 but this was not tested. See some of the comments below for ways to run Multiple IE on Windows 2000 (page 4).
  • The Developer tool bar from Microsoft WILL NOT work in IE6
  • Sometimes IE5, IE5.5 and IE6 crash unexpectedly.
  • Microsoft supplemental EULA says : IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A VALID EULA FOR ANY "OS PRODUCT", YOU ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL, COPY, OR OTHERWISE USE THE OS COMPONENTS AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS UNDER THIS SUPPLEMENTAL EULA.
  • Update December 2007: A recent windows update broke the Multiple IE installation and unfortunately this means you'll have to reinstall Multiple IE to get it to work again. I haven't yet identified which update broke the installation.

When I click on a dropdownlist on a webpage in IE7 the IE6 crashes.
Can something done about this?

IE6 shows as IE7

I installed Multiple IEs with no problem, but when I ran IE6 and went to the HELP menu and chose "About Internet Explorer" it shows that I am running version 7.0.5730. Why is this? Is it not IE6 but really IE7? Or did I not install the program properly?

EXCELLENT Product

Thanks for a fantastic product! (Thanks alone doesnt pay the bills, so I just sent you some coin as well)

I have found the software very helpful for testing my software on older browsers. Worked like a Charm!

Thanks again!

Which service pack on the IE versions?

I'm currently doing some software testing, and I'm wondering which service pack these IE versions come with? How can I check this?

Flash ad error

When I load a page which contains Flash ads in IE6, every time it tries to load the ad it popups this error message "Press OK to continue loading the content of this page". Does anyone know how to deactivate this?

well done

a nice work, this is what i need

IE6 Running, Help-about still displays 7.0.5730.13

Even though the MultipleIEs installed IE6 version is 6.0.2800.1106, help-about is still reporting IE7 version numbers. Is this because the help-about call is looking at default browser registry entries?
Problem is I'm using older software that won't launch without IE6, yet it can't find 6.0 on the system when installed as standalone.
I was hoping to keep IE7 installed and IE6 as standalone.
Any tricks?

Don't pay attention to the

Don't pay attention to the about box. It will always show IE7's about page. This is because the about box is tied down to a system page. In reality, if IE6 interface starts fine then you have indeed IE6.

IE8

any chance of including the IE8 beta install within Multiple IE????

wow

if this works I will love you forever...and ever.

Cookies don't work everywhere

Some people, including me, have still problems with cookies.
I can add to the discussion that my IE6 is not accepting cookies for my Plone site, which I want to test.
At the time, though, reddit.com and other login sites work great. Maybe it's something about the software that manages the cookies (Plone in my case)?

Yep, same here. Windows XP

Yep, same here. Windows XP SP2, IE5.5 & IE7.0 no problem, IE6 does not work with javascript cookies.
BTW not using the Plone site, but own javascript code that works on a stand alone IE6 (and the multipleIE 5.5!).

Annoying, but apart from this: great tool!!

Not working for me

I have IE 7 installed and I am trying to run the Multiple IE package. When I check on the version ( for example in the IE 6 window) is says it is still IE7.

I have checked the registry and it does in fact say xIE and it is showing 6.0000

Brilliant !

Just found you on a Google search, and this is just what I need. Well done.

renaming iexplore.exe causes compatibility mode

This is really minor, but I'm running objectdock as my taskbar and when I have multiple processes running with the same filename, they insist on using the same icon (even though the .exe's are in different places). I have tried changing the filename of my standalone IE's, but that causes them to run in 'compatibility mode' (a little popup proclaims it when you start the app). I've even tried editing the .dll's etc to try and replace references there to the new filename, but I cannot get rid of compatibility mode--anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Good Work

we web developers have to test our sites in IE 6 and IE 7 so this is really helpful for that. Thought IE is not a good browser have to make the websites to work on it.

Works like a charn

Best thing I have downloaded in years.
Thanks.

Very useful utility

I'm a web developer and, after the Windoze Update forcibly installed IE7 on my Windows eXtra Pathetic setup, I found that I could no longer test sites, pages and scripts in IE6. This would be a pain as there are lots of IE6 users out there, and as IE6 is 'quirky' (to put it mildly) with CSS and the DOM it's essential that I test my stylesheets and Javascript progs out on IE6. This utility is thus extremely useful, so many thanks to the developer for putting the effort into it and making it publicly available. When I installed it I thought for a mo that IE6 hadn't installed as the About box claims IE7, but that's obviously just a Registry value - it was truly IE6 that was running, and I was able to run IE7 alongside it.

And a big raspberry to all the trolls and flamers ;-\

Yep - I have exactly the same problem. Initially I thought it was a problem with the CSS until I tested it on Google and found that I could no longer enter search terms in the World's most popular website. Has anyone found a workaround for this..?

Only need IE6

I installed this simply to run IE6 along with IE7, so that's all I chose from the installation menu. It added the IE6 shortcut to my desktop but when i click it, it always starts IE7.

Am I confused about how this works?

Cookies again

Has anyone started having problems with cookies again in older versions of IE than 7? I don't know if an update has caused this problem but cookies simply don't work any more in Ie6 and 5.5 at least.

Thank you

Great tool, thank you very much.

Works great

Very useful utility in situations where I can't use Firefox (ie, work) but still need ancient IE6 for some work apps while also running IE7 (which is better than IE6 but crappier than Firefox). Works great first time. Thank you!!!

Broken with XP sp3?

Hi

MS Autoupdate has installed sp3 on my machine and now MultipleIEs (which has been working fine) fails on IE5 and IE5.5.

I've tried reinstalling several times (and rebooting, obviously) but no dice :(

Anyone else seen this or is this just my install?

Thanks!

How to have the IE Developer Toolbar working in IE6

I've found that the IE Developer Toolbar works after removing Wininet.dll from the IE6 folder. (I assume there's a conflict between the two.) This means, however, that cookies will not work.

Developer Toolbar with IE6

I got developer toolbar working with IE6 SP2 (v 6.0.2900.2180) using these steps:

1. Install 7-zip
2. Extract XP SP2 installation package into some directory (open the .exe file with 7-zip)
3. For each one of these files:

browselc.dll dxtmsft.dll mshtml.dll urlmon.dll xpsp2res.dll
browseui.dll dxtrans.dll shdoclc.dll vbscript.dll iexplore.exe
jscript.dll shdocvw.dll wininet.dll mshtml.tlb

Find the corresponding files, i.e., browselc.dll corresponds with browselc.dl_

4. Open the corresponding file (i.e. browselc.dl_ for browselc.dll) with 7-zip
5. Create an empty directory for your portable IE
6. Extract the file in no.4 the the directory in no.5
7. Create an empty file named iexplore.exe.local
8. Copy dispex.dll to the directory in no.5. It's not in the SP2 package, so you'll have to copy it from another source. I copy it from C:\WINDOWS\system32. My dispex.dll version is 5.6.0.8825.
8. You can test your portable IE version using

I can't get IE6 connect to internet either

I can't get IE6 connect to internet either but I can connect to my local http server. I even uninstalled my firewall software and still can't get connect. Furthermore, I checked the request sent by IE6, the DNS has resolved, the request to the host has sent but no more. My IE7 and Firefox are both working fine.

Multiple IE stopped working today

Fantastic product for developers guys.

As of today, Aug 21 2008, our standalone IE6 (which has worked fine for about 2 years) on more than one XP machine, has serious problems with displaying images, and subsequently crashing. We suspect a microsoft update as per December 2007. Has anyone experienced similar problems and if so, does anyone have a solution to fix the problem.

IE4 ?

Thanks for taking us to the past when you just said"damn IE and Billy Gates, f*ck with your mocosoft". Still people using win 98, or more beyond, still people using IE4 ? oh my Godness if so, please wake me up.

shdocvw.dll issue

In the IE 6 version and other version other than 3 if I remove the dll shdocvw.dll it will run otherwise it throws an error with the report a bug pop up and will not open. Any idea what this dll does and if I just get rid of it opens but it asks me several times if I want to continue loading content when I hit pages.

I have a fully patched/updated xp sp2 as of 8/28/08 so it may be an update or somethign causing this.

IE 6 Freezing

I have just installed MultipleIEs on my system (xp home). Unfortunately every-time that I try to open IE6 it freezes and I have to use Windows Task Manager to shut it down.

Has any one experienced this issue? Is there any sort of a fix for this?

Thanks

Any update on the cookies issue?

Hi,

Great application! Just wondering if anyone has been able to figure out how to get IE6 to accept cookies?

Fix for the "Press OK to continue loading content" IE6 nag...

I get a bit frustrated seeing this dumb nag on IE6 (especially today, working on a `framed' site, which loads 3-4 flash animations at a time), so I decided to fix it the hard way - assembly debug and crack-a-like bytefix :)
After 5-10 minutes walking through all the .DLL's IE6 uses locally (.local :p) I've found the MessageBoxA calls in MSHTML.DLL, so breakpointed it and verified the shit is there.
Here's a little bit of information from the debugger (OllyDbg 1.10)

Yeah, the lame remark - do NOT forget to backup your existing MSHTML.DLL file.
Yeah, the second lame - Files are located somewhere in C:\Program Files\Multiple IEs\IE6\ (default)

IE7 please

Can we add IE7 to the list. I think it's starting to be important because we need to test in ie8 now... it isn't as forgiving as ie7 & ff.

IE7 standalone is unnecessary

IE7 as a standalone is unnecessary as IE8 comes with an IE7 browser emulation mode:

Tools > Developer Tools > Browser Mode: IE7

Stop using IE6

Can you please stop offering this download? That way I as a webdesigner have a good excuse not to adapt websites to IE6 anymore, because "unfortunately, I don't have and can't install that browser on my computer".

Please, think of us webdesigners. Shoot a Microsoft employee today.

MultipleIE Workaround (kindof) for lost bookmarks

Like many others I had IE7 installed as my default browser, added MultipleIE and found out that all my legacy browser bookmarks opened the print dialog. However, I found a workaround that helped me avoid re-typing my URL every time:

Go to the starting page for your test website and set that to be your homepage. All the stand-alones will map the home icon to that URL. Unfortunately IE 7 switches too, but at least in IE7 you can set more than one URL as your homepage, so it's workable.

If anyone has found a more permanent fix, I'd love to see it, because I miss not having my other bookmarks!

IE6 now blocked in WinXP

I installed IE6 from you installer on WinXp with no problem, but when running IE6, windows now seems to be blocking focus to the application. I can neither tab to it or click on it with the mouse. I was able to kill the process in the task manager but that's it...

As of this date, January 23rd 2009, WinXP appears to be blocking the use of IE6.

I uninstalled it.

IE6 standalone: cannot select or enter text

Apologies if this has already been covered (I couldn't find any reference to it).

The IE6 standalone works a treat (running alongside my IE8 RC1 on WinXP SP3) though it seems I cannot select or enter text at all in any web page (IE8 is unaffacted). Form fields can receive focus but I can't enter anything into them!

I wonder if you can confirm that this is a limitation of the standalone rather than a true reflection of behaviour in a native installation of IE6?

I can live with that if that is the case as it is still a robust test of IE6 rendering in all other respects.

Thanks for all the good work on this.

BackgroundImageCache flicker fix doesn't work

Tredosoft has done an awesome job of making standalone IE versions available for devs. It makes my job that much easier.

One thing I noticed is that the IE6 image flicker fixes (JS and CSS) don't work in the standalone. However, it does fix image caching, you just won't be able to see it with the standalone.

In other words:

<script type="text/javascript">
try {
document.execCommand("BackgroundImageCache",false, true);
} catch(e) {}
</script>

and...

<style type="text/css">
html {
filter:expression(
document.execCommand("BackgroundImageCache", false, true));
}
</style>

Both of these do fix the cached image flicker ridiculousness, but you won't be able to see the results in the standalone.

Update for IE 8?

Does anyone know if there are plans to update this package to include IE7 now that IE8 is out? If so, would there be any platform specific restrictions? i.e.) Issues on Vista.

Thanks! Love the package, very helpful.

Alternative

For those who haven't noticed, Tredosoft states on the Multiple IE page "Multiple IE is no longer maintained and there are no plans to continue maintaining it!".

I successfully tested a regular IE8 install, combined with IE7 standalone, and Multiple IE for IE6.

Then I ran across this surprisingly sparsely mentioned alternative, Internet Explorer Collection http://finalbuilds.edskes.net/iecollection.htm - I removed the former IE7 standalone and multiple IE. Again, with the regular installation of IE8, I used Internet Explorer Collection for IE7 + 6. It's a tidy installer, including the developer toolbar that works in all versions (first time I have this working with IE6!)

Both these solutions have the issue of form selects not dropping down, instead triggering the popup blocker notification, on 8 + 7, but works in 6, and text fields receive focus only in IE8.

Solution to disabled input fields in IE6!!! With a bonus!

Hi, somewhere I found (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/829665/ie6-forms-focus-disabled-on-input-fields-multiple-ies-after-ie8) a workaround for IE6 after installation of IE8. Just run IE6, then uninstall MultipleIEs (IE6 still running). Then restart IE6 and voila... Don't know, how can one have another older versions installed (I use just IE6), but I guess that you can then copy the leftover files whereever you want, so you can install back MultipleIEs without IE6 and have it's files separated. I'm happy to solve this!

And what for the bonus? Yeah, I can see no popup when loading pages with flash. Great!

Why does not the installer install IE6 this way? :-D

Internet Explorer Collection

The issue of form selects not dropping down is fixed in the latest version of Internet Explorer Collection.

What's New in Internet Explorer Collection 1.5.0.0:
- Fixed a bug which made it impossible to enter anything in input and textarea fields in IE5 up to IE7 when IE8 was installed

IE8 out... want to run IE7 alongside all these older versions..

Does anyone know of anything that will allow IE7 to continue running on my PC after I install IE8??? The installer is great, but since its no longer being maintained I'm guessing IE7 isn't going to be added to that.....

Possible IE6 Cookie Fix

I was also having issues with cookies in IE6. I installed the IE Tab extension for Firefox and set the IE path to the Multiple IE installation folder. It now seems to accept cookies (not sure if it's accepting them through FF or what) but it could work as a possible solution for those having the same issue.

Nevermind, the extension still uses IE7. Still looking for a cookie fix...

Fix for "Press OK to continue loading content" IE6 nag - Reprise

The download link in Polizei's fix for the IE6 nag (21/10/2008 above) is dead, so I made another mshtml.dll according to his instructions. It is here.

N.B. Security-conscious users who want to check no dodgy changes were made could compare the modified dll to the one in Multiple IE's IE6 drawer by opening a DOS box and using the FC command with /B switch.
